What is the RSMS

Subclass 187 Visa?

The RSMS Subclass 187 visa allows skilled workers to be nominated by an Australian employer in a regional or low-population growth area to live and work in Australia permanently. It is aimed at addressing skill shortages in regional Australia by offering workers the chance to contribute to the country’s regional workforce while providing them with the benefits of permanent residency. The RSMS Subclass 187 visa has two main streams, the Transition Stream and the Direct Entry Stream. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on the Transition Stream, which is designed for workers already in Australia on a temporary visa under the Subclass 457 or Subclass 482 program.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the RSMS Subclass 187 Transition Stream, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1.Nomination by an Approved Employer: The first step is for the applicant to be nominated by an Australian employer in a regional or low-population growth area. The employer must be an approved sponsor and demonstrate that the position being offered is genuine and in demand.

2.Temporary Work Experience: Applicants must have worked in Australia on a temporary Subclass 457 or Subclass 482 visa for a minimum of three years in the same occupation with the same employer. The position being nominated for the Subclass 187 visa must be the same occupation that the applicant has been employed in for the required period.

3.Occupation on the Skilled Occupation List: The applicant’s occupation must be listed on the relevant skilled occupation list for the Subclass 187 visa. These lists include occupations that are in demand across a range of sectors such as healthcare, engineering, trades, and technology.

4. Skills and Qualifications: Applicants must possess the necessary skills, qualifications, and work experience for the nominated occupation. They will need to provide evidence of their qualifications and work history to support their application. Some occupations may require a formal skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority.

5. English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate an adequate level of English language proficiency. This can be done by providing the results of a recognized English language test, such as IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL. The required score will depend on the occupation and visa stream.

6.Health and Character Requirements: As with most Australian visas, applicants must meet health and character requirements. This typically involves undergoing a medical examination and providing police clearance certificates to show that the applicant has no criminal history.

7.Age Limitation: Applicants must be under the age of 45 at the time of application. However, certain exemptions may apply, particularly for individuals with exceptional skills or those who have worked in Australia for a long period.
